Abatellis Palace – The Regional Gallery of Sicily

0
Palazzo Abatellis, a shining example of Catalan Gothic architecture, dates back to the end of the 15th century and was the residence of Francesco Abatellis, Master Portulan of the kingdom. On his death, the palace was inherited by his wife, who founded the women's monastery of Santa Maria della Pietà. The new use required some structural interventions, such as the construction of a chapel and later of the adjacent Church of Santa Maria della Pietà. The palace was then severely damaged during World War II and restored in the 1950s, when it became a Medieval Art Gallery. Today, the rooms of the palace house numerous works of art, including those by Pietro Novelli, Antoon Van Dyck, Domenico and Antonello Gagini, Filippo Paladini and Vito D'Anna.
