Abbey of San Mercuriale – The saint who defeated the dragon
The name of the Abbey of San Mercuriale comes from the name of the first bishop of Forlì (4th century), who was called Mercuriale. This saint was always depicted with a dragon at his feet, because of a legend that said that after the unsuccessful attempts of many knights to kill a terrible dragon, he managed to tame it and (after imprisoning it in his pastoral stole) to throw it into a well from which it never returned.
