Abbey of Tre Fontane – St. Paolo’s head
During the 2nd-3rd century A.D. it was believed that St. Paolo Apostle was martyred in the area of the Abbey of the Three Fountains in 67 A.D.. "Three Fountains" because, according to tradition, St. Paolo's head bounced three times after beheading and that water sprang from the places touched by the head. However, other older versions, say that the execution was carried out in Via Ostiense, corresponding to today's Villa di Lucina, where St. Paolo was probably buried and where the Basilica of St. Paolo fuori le Mura was erected.
