Al Santo Pharmacy – The first pharmacy in Padua (and the first woman pharmacist)

0
The Farmacia al Santo is the oldest pharmacy in Padua. A document attests to the presence in this district of a certain Symon Specialis, the first known 'apothecary', as early as 1261. The 'spezierie' were the pharmacies of the Middle Ages, the commercial establishments where syrups and spices, i.e. medicines taken directly from plants, were available. Even more curious, however, is a name that appears in the list of members of the guilds of arts and crafts of 1380: among the pharmacists, a certain Domina Pietra is mentioned, who worked at the 'Crosara del Santo', the crossroads of the Saint. She was the first female 'apothecary' of whom there is evidence.
