Alley of Orphans – Lair of the Blessed Pauls

0
The narrow and silent Vicolo degli Orfani leads to an underground world. A passage through a garden leads to the lair of the Beati Paoli, a very famous sect that operated in Palermo between the 15th and 17th centuries, whose aim was to defend the weak against the abuses of the powerful, usually punished by death for their sins. The historical judgment on these men is quite controversial: some consider them heroic executioners and others just ruthless murderers. The garden of this alley hides their "tribunal", where they would meet to make decisions, then disappear into the underground passages of the area (Palermo is full of them) and reappear in another part of the city.
