According to tradition, the chains that imprisoned St. Peter in Mamertino jail in Rome, are preserved inside the Church of St. Pietro in Vincoli. The two chains touched and fused together miraculously, impossible to separate anymore. To recall this happening, the Church of St. Pietro in Vincoli was erected in 442 A.D.. The chains are shown to the public every year on the 1st of August.
