Basilica di Santa Maria in Ara Coeli – The hole on the façade
The first public clock was installed on the façade of Basilica di Santa Maria in Ara Coeli on December, 27th 1412. One of its main features was the bell "pro horis pulsandis" ("ringing hourly"). This clock was so important that a special committee of noblemen was in charge of its maintenance and functioning. However, the clock was moved to Piazza del Campidoglio in 1806, leaving a large hole on the Basilica's façade.
