Basilica di Santa Prassede – Squared halos

0
A curious thing can be noticed looking at the famous mosaic at the Basilica di Santa Prassede's apse. Both Pope Pasquale I and his mother Teodora have squared and blue halos above their heads. Why? The square halos means that the person was still alive when he/she was depicted; it represents the Earth and its 4 cardinal points. The blue colour represents purity and spirituality.
