Basilica of San Domenico – The Christ Patiens

0
The basilica of San Domenico houses a crucifix by Giunta Pisano. The artist made several crucifixes in the course of his life, but only four have survived to the present day and they are all fundamental in the history of art, since they were the first in which the dying Christ on the cross was represented, the so-called "Cristo Patiens", with his face to the left and depicted in a much more realistic manner than in Byzantine art. This representation was later taken up by Cimabue in his famous crucifix in Arezzo.
