If you want to get a glimpse of the true face of St Catherine, you need only go to the Chapel of the Vaults in the Basilica of San Domenico. On the walls of the Chapel there are numerous paintings illustrating the life of the Saint. One, in particular, is a faithful portrait of her: it is 'Catherine and a Devotee', a painting dating from the last quarter of the 14th century. It is considered to be a true portrait of the saint because its author (Andrea Vanni) was a disciple of her and certainly had occasion to see her several times.
