Basilica of San Prospero – The blanket of fog
The basilica of San Prospero is a religious building, an outstanding example of Emilian Baroque. It is dedicated to the city's patron saint. Local devotion goes to St Prospero, who lived in the 5th century and was bishop of Reggio Calabria, following the rescue of the city from Attila's sack: the Huns did not notice the town because a providential intervention invoked by Prospero enveloped Reggio in a generous blanket of fog. The same miracle of obfuscation and in the same circumstances is attributed by the people of Modena to St Geminianus, the patron saint of Modena; fog is after all a very common phenomenon in the Po Valley.
