Basilica of San Saba – The three spinsters

0
On the left nave of the Basilica of San Saba there is an interesting fresco of the 13th century. Three naked women are depicted in a bedroom, something that might seem unappropriate in a church. It is actually the representation of the legend about San Nicola from Bari and the 3 sprinsters, 3 young ladies from a poor but honest family, who are represented in a bedroom near their father worried about their future. It is told that they were really beautiful but, since they belonged to a poor family, their purity was in peril. The man prayed to San Nicola who, during the night, appeared at the window with a bag full of gold coins. With that money, tha man could ensure a good dowry for his daughters' marrriage.
