Basilica of San Savino – Time and the Zodiac

0
A jewel of Romanesque architecture in the city, the basilica of San Savino was built on the initiative of Bishop Everardo in 903. In addition to the anthropomorphic decorations on the capitals and the characteristic medieval ornaments depicting animal and monstrous subjects that decorate the façade, thanks to recent restorations we can now admire two valuable polychrome mosaics dating back to the 12th century: the one located in the presbytery, representing Time and its eternal turning, which becomes valuable for Man only when he uses the cardinal virtues, and the one in the crypt, formed by large oval decorations set against a backdrop of moving sea waves, depicting the signs of the zodiac with their associated months and trades.
