Basilica of San Teodoro – The painted history of San Teodoro

0
On the north wall of the transept of the Basilica of St Theodore is a fresco depicting the story of the saint, painted in 1514. The cycle, which consists of 12 panels, is based on the legend that describes Theodore as the saviour of the Lombard city, besieged in vain by Charlemagne because he was protected with miracles by his bishop. The illustrated story of the saint begins with an angel appearing to the Lombard king Desiderius to suggest the election of Theodore as bishop of Pavia and ends with his death. In reality, Theodore, who was bishop of Pavia between 770 and 785, spent his early years in exile and only returned to the city after the victory of the Franks in 774.
