Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta – The legend of Mrs Sauli

0
According to a popular legend, the decision to build the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta was taken in 1478 when the wife of the patrician Bandinello Sauli, having asked a noblewoman of the Fieschi family to wait for her, delaying the celebration of mass in the nearby church of Santa Maria in via Lata for some time, was told: "Whoever wants comfort, should get it at his own expense". This refusal, received as an offence by the Sauli, is said to have given rise to a desire to build their own aristocratic church that would surpass the Fieschi's in beauty. The plan only came to fruition in 1549, by which time the rival family, after Gianluigi Fieschi's failed conspiracy against Andrea Doria, had been deprived of its properties in Carignano.
