Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore – Lotto’s inlays

0
The presbytery of the church of Santa Maria Maggiore contains a wooden choir made between 1522 and 1525 by a group of artists; the inlays (depicting events from the Old Testament) were largely designed by Lotto from 1524, who also made the cartoons for the covers and the panels of the dossals, complicated allegories often depicting emblems, rebuses and fantastic representations rendered (albeit only with the use of wood of different shades) in splendid artistic colours. One of the most serious problems that Lotto had to face concerned the chromatic rendering of the carvings in relation to the lighting of the church, a detail that, being in Venice, he could not control personally; in fact, several of his letters concern the positioning of the subjects "because one must have respect for the light".
