The frescoes adorning the presbytery of the Basilica of Sant'Abbondio are one of the most complete pictorial cycles of the early 14th century in Lombardy. In the triumphal arch leading to the presbytery, one can admire the usual representation of the Annunciation with figures of saints placed in the archway. The bowl of the apse has a depiction of the "Deesis" (Christ blessing between the Madonna and John the Baptist) with the images of St Peter and St Paul on either side. It continues on the cylinder of the apse, divided into five bands by four semi-columns, with twenty episodes from the life of Jesus. Finally, in the lower band, next to the episode of the Crucifixion, we find some figures of the Apostles and a Tetramorph (symbols of the Evangelists). The author of this important cycle of frescoes, conventionally called the "Master of Sant'Abbondio", is unknown.
