Basilica of St. Anthony of Padua – The Black Madonna
Inside the Basilica of St Anthony of Padua, in the chapel dedicated to Santa Maria Mater Domini, there is a particular depiction of the Virgin Mary painted in 1396 by Rinaldino di Puydarrieux, which the Paduans have come to call 'Madonna Mora'. Where does this name come from? Six hundred years of dust. Before the 2010 restoration, the Paduan effigy was totally blackened, mainly due to the smoke produced by the votive candles and the thick layer of dust that had settled on the sacred figure over the centuries.
