Basilica of St. Clemente – The swearwords on the fresco

0
Just underground the Basilica of St. Clemente you can see some frescoes of the 11th century representing an episode about the saint's life almost unknown. Legend has it that Teodora, wife of Sisinnio, started to go to the church after her conversion. Sisinnio suspected her wife to be unfaithful: one day he followed her and once he arrived at the church he suddenly became deaf and dumb. Clemente healed him but, instead of being thankful, Sisinnio ordered his servants to tie him to the column but they did not succeed. The painting depicts the moment when Sisinnio shouts to the servants "Fili de le pute, trahite!" ("Tie him tightly, you motherfu??ers"), sentence that is clearly visible on the wall.
