Basilica of St. Silvestro and Martino ai Monti – The oldest church in Rome

0
Not many people know that: Basilica of St. Silvestro and Martino ai Monti holds an important record: to be the oldest church in Rome. It was officially founded in the 3rd century A.D. but the building already existed. It was the house of a Christian plebeian named Equizio who decided to transform his house into a place where the Christians could escape from persecution and, at the same time, continue to practice their religion. Furthermore, if you go along Via Equzia you can notice another interesting thing. Beside the Basilica there is a wall made of blocks of white tuff. These blocks are the ruins of the ancient Mura Serviane, moved here to be used as the basis of this important church.
