Basilica of St. Stefano Maggiore – The “Stone of the Innocents”
At Basilica of St. Stefano Maggiore, just after the entrance and behind a thick bronze grating, there is the well-known "Stone of the Innocents". On this stone, four functionaries under Emperor Valentiniano I were martyred in 367 A.D.. They took a nobleman to court who, however, was a protégé of the emperor; not only he refused to pay his debts but he offended and threatened his creditors. The nobleman condemned them to death but only after long and terrible tortures.
