Bianca Cappello’s Palace – The tragic tale of Bianca and Francesco

0
In via Maggio stands the palace built on Francesco I de' Medici's orders by the architect Bernardo Buontalenti as a gift to Bianca Cappello, Francesco' lover. The Grand Duke, while married to Joanna of Austria, had fallen madly in love with the Venetian noblewoman and wished for her to live as close as possible to his own residence in Palazzo Pitti. Bianca and Francesco eventually saw their dream of love come true: they married in 1579, after Joanna's premature death. The Medici family, however, was forever opposed to their relationship, to the point that the two lovers' deaths (which took place in 1587 in the Medicean villa of Poggio a Caiano, but a single day apart from one another) are suspected by historians to have been the result of arsenic poisoning.
