Once upon a time, on the first Thursday in May, on what was known as the day of the 'zobia masa', a 'cuccagna' tree was set up in Piazza della Frutta. The prize was gloves and a purse, hence the alternative name of Festa della Borsa. There are still traces of this tradition around Padua. For example, if you notice, at the corner of Via Gorizia and Via Marsilio da Padova there is a marble bag sculpted for this very reason.
