Castel Sant’Angelo – The apparition of Archangel Michele

0
In 590 A.D. the plague was spreading all around Rome. Pope Gregorio Magno organised a procession and the whole population participated to pray for the end of the epidemic. When the procession was passing below the Sepulchre of Adriano, Archangel Gabriele appeared on the top of it, sheathing his sword. The Pope interpreted that action as the end of the plague, what actually happened soon after. To remember the happening, a statue of the Archangel was built and located on the top of the castle exaclty as he appeared to the people and, from that day, the Mole Adriana was renamed "Castel Sant'Angelo".
