Cathedral Museum – Precious treasures of sacred art

0
The Museum of the Cathedral of Lucca is located in a building complex consisting of a 13th-century tower house, a 16th-century church and a main body of 14th-century origin. It houses the works of art that were part of the cathedral's furnishings, including statues and stone artefacts, jewellery and sacred vestments, chalices and candlesticks, paintings, codices and missals. Of particular note is an ivory diptych from the 6th century and a very rare corpus of five choir books from 1300. Also very famous is the so-called 'Croce dei Pisani', made by the goldsmith Vincenzo di Michele from Piacenza. A large part of the collection is made up of objects that characterised devotion to the figure of the Holy Face, an ancient crucifix venerated throughout Europe in the Middle Ages and now kept in the Cathedral.
