Cathedral of San Lorenzo – Barocci’s Deposition from the Cross

0
The Cathedral of San Lorenzo was built between 1345 and 1490. The most important work of art in the cathedral is Federico Barocci's 'Deposition from the Cross' from 1569. Preserved in the chapel of San Bernardino and considered one of the masterpieces of 16th century European painting, it is the only one by the Urbino painter still in the city. The work greatly influenced Umbrian painting of the time, opening up new perspectives. It was commissioned by the Collegio della Mercanzia, owner of the chapel since 1515, as evidenced by the logo on the gate.
