Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta – The ‘Deposition from the Cross’ by Antelami

0
A sixteenth-century flight of steps in red Verona marble leads up to the transept of Parma Cathedral, where, on the right, is the famous relief of the Deposition from the Cross, the first work by Benedetto Antelami. According to the latest interpretations, the composition symbolically depicts Christ's marriage to the Church, represented by the female figure on the left with the banner of victory and the chalice, and the repudiation of the synagogue, depicted by the figure on the right, before whom the archangel Raphael bows his head in defeat.
