Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta – The incarnation of the Egyptian god Thot
The first large painting in front of the main entrance to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta may be surprising for the figure it depicts, which has little to do with the Christian Church. Inside a frame formed by an interweaving of swastikas, stands the figure of Hermes Trismegistus ("thrice great"), a mythical and symbolic figure, believed to be the incarnation of the Egyptian god Thot (corresponding to the Greek Hermes and the Latin Mercury), inventor of writing, alchemy and the whole science that he called hermetic.
