Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore – The horns of revenge
Along the left side of Santa Maria del Fiore, atop a carrying column, you’ll be able to spot a bull’s head peering out from the eaves. Legend has it that one of the master carpenters at work on the cathedral had an affair with the wife of a baker whose shop overlooked the church. Unfortunately, it appears the baker caught wind of the liaison and denounced his wife’s adultery. Thus the carpenter, as a means of revenge, aimed the bull’s head at the baker’s house, so that its horns (a popular metaphor for cuckoldry) would always remind him of his spouse’s infidelity.
