Piazza del Duomo (better known as Piazza dei Miracoli) is Pisa's most famous place of artistic interest, visited by tourists from all over the world. It is overlooked by the Baptistery, the Cathedral, the Leaning Tower and the Camposanto, places that symbolise the various phases of the city's religious life (called 'miracles' by Gabriele D'Annunzio in his novel 'Forse che si, forse che no'). Some theories suggest that the main monuments that embellish the square are arranged according to the zodiac sign of Libra, symbolising one of the city's presumed etymological meanings. According to other scholars, however, the non-alignment between the various buildings is due exclusively to the absence of a rigid design plan, which did not yet see the square as a unitary space.
