Christian Museum – The Octagonal Baptistery of Callisto

0
The Christian Museum of Cividale del Friuli is located in a few rooms adjacent to the Cathedral and houses some of the most representative examples of early medieval sculpture, especially from the Longobard period. One of the great monuments preserved here is the Baptistery, known as the Baptistery of Callisto, formed by an octagon with seven original arches and one spurious, supported by eight columns that insist on a balustrade in which fragments of marble plutei from the early Middle Ages are inserted. The arches are adorned with inscriptions and plant, animal and geometric motifs, while in the lower part there are two sculpted slabs very similar to the altar of Duke Ratchis (perhaps even by the same author) whose symbolic figures represented are related to the Sacrament of Baptism.
