Church of Madonna del Divino Amore – The blessing of the throat
At Church of Madonna del Divino Amore masses and blessings are celebrated every February, 3rd. On this occasion, the priest blesses the people crossing two candles above their throat. The origins of this traditon comes from one of the myracles attributed to St. Biagio. He was born during the 3rd century A.D. in Armenia and he became the bishop of the city of Sebaste. Among his miracles, one is related to the blessing of the throat cited before. A child was suffocating because of a fish bone stuck in his throat: the saint touched the area with his hands and prayed, saving the child.
