The Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament in the Church of St. Bartholomew and St. Gaetano houses the oval painting of the 'Madonna del Suffragio' by Guido Reni. This delicate work of art was at the centre of a little mystery. In 1855, the painting was stolen by two thugs who had hidden in the bell tower. It was an unprecedented crime that struck the people of Bologna in a period that was already black. 1855 was in fact a tragic year for Bologna, the year in which the city was struck by a serious cholera epidemic. However, the search for the painting began, until finally, five years later, it was found in London and returned to the church on 2 February, the day of Mary's purification.
