The Church of San Giovanni a Porta Latina is full of legends. The Medieval colonnade and the naves are supported by classical columns that, legend has it, once belonged to a temple consecrated to Diana. The church is dedicated to St. Giovanni Evangelista because of the Aura Legend: Emperor Domiziano heard stories about Giovanni and he brought him to Rome. He was thrown into a tub full of hot oil in front of Porta Latina but he was uninjured. At the end, the Emperor sent him to the Patmos Island, where the Evangelist wrote the Apocalypse.
