Church of San Pietro alla Magione – The name of the Templars
The Church of San Pietro alla Magione hides a little secret in its very name: the reference to 'alla Magione' has Templar origins. In fact, the church belonged to the Knights Templar from the 12th century onwards, as shown by a document from 1148, when they ran a hospice for pilgrims ('la Magione'), from which the church took its name. With the suppression of the Templars in 1312, the church passed to the Knights Hospitallers, who later took the title of the Order of the Knights of Malta. From the Order of the Knights of Malta, the church later passed to the Diocese, becoming a parish church that still exists today.
