Church of Santa Lucia alla badia – The Caravaggio canvas
The Church of Santa Lucia alla Badia is a building that was completely rebuilt after the earthquake that devastated Syracuse in 1693. The façade is divided by an entablature and a balcony with a fine wrought-iron railing. The lower part is in Baroque style with a magnificent portal enclosed by twisted columns, surmounted by a pediment decorated with the symbols of the martyrdom of Saint Lucia: a column, a sword, a palm and a crown. But the real treasure of the church is inside; in the apse is a large canvas painted by Caravaggio depicting the burial of St Lucia.
