Church of Santa Maria al Monte – The forgotten saint
Throughout the '80s and '90s, many mysterious discoveries were made concerning the church of Santa Maria al Monte. For instance, reinforcement works on the façade revealed a hidden door underneath the old plasterwork, leading to a crypt containing a coffin still containing a skeleton. After much research scholars connected the site to the lost 1630 burial of father Cherubino Fournier, a famous figure for whose beatification there had been much popular clamor. The Church's sluggish bureaucracy, however, led to his case being deferred and tabled so many times that, when the Vatican finally took it under consideration, the priest's grave had already been lost to memory. The canonical inspection therefore couldn't be performed, and Fournier missed his chance at sainthood.
