The Church of San Salvatore de Cacabris was demolished to build the Church of Santa Maria del Pianto. The church owes its name to a miracle happened in 1546 when an image of the Holy Mary painted on Portico di Ottavia's wall, started to cry after a fight started because of some Jewish refused to abjure their faith. Lazzaro Baldi took inspiration from this episode and painted the "Miracolo della Madonna Piangente" on a standard that was placed at the beginning of the nave of the newly built church.
