Church of Santa Maria della Pioggia – The prodigious table
The church known today as Santa Maria della Pioggia owes its name to a panel painting by Michele di Matteo depicting a Madonna and Child surrounded by seven heads of angels. This panel is considered miraculous for several reasons. In addition to being found unharmed under the rubble of a building destroyed by fire, it is also credited with restoring sight to a blind man who came to pay homage to the icon and with helping the Bolognese people during a long period of drought in the 16th century.
