Church of Santa Maria Maggiore – The “bell of the lost woman”

0
A beautiful bell, with a curious story, is preserved at Musei Vaticani, precisely in Galleria Urbano VIII. According to tradition, a female pilgrim got lost near Colle Esquilino in the Middle Ages. It was dark and she couldn't find her way anymore so she desperately asked to the Virgin Mary for help. On that moment, one of the 5 bells of the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore started to ring. She followed the sound until she reached the church and from there she could finally find her way home. Since then, to recall this episode a bell has been ringing every day at 9 p.m., the same time the pilgrim prayed to the Holy Mary.
