Church of St. Alessio – The staircase of the saint
In one of the chapels of the Church of St. Alessio, the staircase under which the saint has lived for 17 years is preserved. The legend has it that Alessio, of a noble Roman family, the night of his wedding escaped to Odessa, where he lived as an ascetic. During the years, he became known and after a long journey, he decided to go back to his family. However, his father didn't recognised him: he thought he was a beggar and offered him a place under the staircase. The saint spent there 17 years, writing his memories. Only after his death the family discovered his true identity.
