Church of St. Caterina della Rota – The two red uniforms
If you look on the left of the altar in Church of St. Caterina della Rota your attention will be attracted by two red uniforms. They belong to the Confraternity of Sediari Pontifici, merged with the Confraternity of Palafrenieri. Members of Sediari Pontifici were in charge of carrying on shoulders the Pope seated in his gestatorial chair. The Palafrenieri were noblemen belonging to the Papal Court and their name comes from the horse they used during processions, called "parafreno". The two confraternities merged when the use of the horse of the latter was abolished.
