Church of St Catherine – Vasari’s painting

0
Originally built as an imitation of the Roman Pantheon, the church of Santa Caterina di Livorno has frescoes painted in the 19th century by Cesare Maffei inside the dome, making it the largest frescoed space in Tuscany. Among the treasures kept in the temple, however, the nativity scene inside the Chapel of the Madonna del Rosario, one of the many chapels built into the supporting arches of the dome, is also very beautiful. Also of interest is the precious oil painting by Vasari, depicting the Coronation of the Virgin. It was originally exhibited in Rome, in the Chapel of San Michele in the Vatican. It was purchased in 1818 and donated to the church.
