Church of St John the Evangelist – The cycle of frescoes by Correggio

0
The dome of the Church of St. John the Evangelist is decorated with the famous cycle of frescoes by Correggio, a work dating back to 1520. Traditionally identified as the Vision of St. John on the Island of Patmos, it instead depicts the "Transit of St. John", a rather unusual theme in the Christian iconographic tradition. Visible only from the presbytery, the evangelist is depicted as an old man looking up to heaven, while in the centre is the figure of Christ, who is reaching out to his dying disciple to accompany him on his ascent. The shapes, colours and light of the clouds on which the apostles sit transform the space of the dome into an illusionistic space of great depth, in which every architectural support disappears.
