Above the main altar in Church of St. Maria dell'Orto there is the well-known "macchina delle quarantore" ("40 hours-machine") which, more than a machine, is a particular structure with 213 candles. In the past, a host was put here for 40 hours between Good Friday and Easter, the same hours that Christ spent inside the sepulchre. Today, the structure is used during the Mass of the Last Supper on Holy Thursday only. On this day, the church is open until midnight and all the candles are lit up.
