Church of St. Maria in Vallicella – Rubens’ hidden painting

0
At the beginning of the 16th century, on the façade of a public restroom, there was a fresco representing the Holy Virgin with Child. In 1535, an unbeliever threw a stone to the wall and the painting started to bleed. After the miracle, it was moved to the Church of Vallicella, behind the altar and later, it was asked to Rubens to create a painting that could protect the Holy Virgin. The artist painted "Madonna Adored by Angels" in 1608; it can be raised and lowered in order to hide or show the miraculous image.
