Church of St.Onofrio al Gianicolo – The saviour of Tasso’s bell

0
The smallest bell in the Church of St. Onofrio was named "campana del Tasso" in 1595, when its ringing announced the death of the famous poet, Torquato Tasso, hosted in the near convent. This bell was almost destroyed in 1849. In order to protect the newly established Roman Republic, the soldiers received the order to seize all the bells and melt them to make cannons. The priest begged the soldiers to save that small bell: Garibaldi was so moved by that prayer that he decided to spare the Tasso's bell.
