Church of St Sophia – The Mithraeum
Inside the church of Santa Sofia are the remains of a pagan temple from Roman times, a place of worship dedicated to the god Mithras, a deity of Persian origin who was worshipped as an alternative to the official religion of Rome. According to legend, this temple was connected by an underground tunnel to another place of worship, located on the opposite bank of the Bacchiglione river, which passed close by.
