Church of the Guardian Angels – The little “Madonna of Poaritt”

0
In front of the entrance to the Church of the Guardian Angels is an old painting with a curious history. The painting, depicting Our Lady of the Assumption with St Joseph (holding a lily) and St Roch (with a pilgrim's staff), was made by an unknown hand between the 18th and 19th centuries. It was originally located in Corso di Porta Romana, and only later was it moved under the entrance arch of the building in Strada della Carità 4. People from the neighbourhood often passed by for a prayer or to bring her flowers. She was the neighbourhood madonnina, affectionately known as the "madonnina di poaritt". Then, in the mid-1990s, the building in Strada della Carità 4 was sold and the madonnina was placed in an office in Via Santa Redegonda. Here it was forgotten until a spontaneous committee requested that it be returned to its devoted parish.
