Colleoni Chapel – The ambitious Bartholomew

0
The Colleoni Chapel was built between 1472 and 1476 as a mausoleum for the condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni, to a design by Giovanni Antonio Amadeo. In Colleoni's original idea, the chapel was not to be "confined" to the small square in front of the cathedral, but was destined to become the pivot of the space in Piazza Vecchia, since the condottiero had planned to demolish Palazzo della Ragione, which was considered a decrepit medieval structure. But there is more. Because if you look at the façade of the chapel, located next to the medieval prothyrum of Santa Maria Maggiore, you can see that the former is significantly higher than the latter, marking the hierarchical dominance imagined by Colleoni.
